Showcases - Intro
The Dutch Skies 360° HDR’s are being used worldwide for 3D, Architecture, VR, VFX, Games, Documentaries, TV Series, Advertisement productions , Movies etc. since the project started in 2008.
Had some wild adventures over time………
Years ago got a request from a Producer who wanted a couple of Dutch Skies 360° HDR’s to be used in a upcoming ( Hollywood ) movie. We were almost done finishing the details, suddenly got a mail that the producer needed to cancel the order for the selected Dutch Skies 360° ( HDR )...reason was that the Law-firm ( their role in film production is protecting the production from lawsuits, ensuring the film can be distributed without legal obstacles ) did not believe I was the owner of my own Skies………. to the complete surprise of the Producer and me ..and quickly had a big laugh about it ( and still do :) )
Another day somewhere in the past, went to blockbuster movie here in the Pathé Cinema Scheveningen and seeing the Dutch Skies 360° HDR’s being used in a lot of scenes of the movie. During the movie was thinking about the fact that the captured skies being shown in the movie, were recorded a couple of 100 meters from the cinema and… no one in the cinema at that moment was aware of that. Plus that I’m not allowed - due to non-disclosures - mentioning movie details anywhere. It sounds a bit awkward but in fact it isn't, this situation it stays a bit magically for me personally.
So It’s very hard to get permission ( in other words for 98,2 % impossible) due to the non-disclosure contracts ( specially the bigger Game/ TV Series / movie clients ) to get permission to put it here on this showcases page or even talk about it in public. Its just part of the deal.
Meanwhile at least 2 billion ( not a typo) people have see the Dutch Skies 360° HDR’s in action somewhere without noticing the skies were recorded in Scheveningen.
This makes the recording position ( 52.1032722 | Latitude, 4.2582423 | Longitude ) in combination with the Skies from Scheveningen a very known but unknown film location!
Guess this could be the reason it’s not mentioned by the writers of the Dutch book - Fantastic Film locations ( Google Translated Dutch > English ). Original Dutch version > Fantastische Filmlocaties.
Anyway on this page will show some projects where got permission to show it here. For sure there are a lot of productions that not aware of.
First some technical notes , can imagine you are not aware of it, so how are the Dutch Skies 360° ( HDR ) technically being used by clients? Entered some details into a.i to generate a kind of blue-print of the Skies - HDR pipeline. Noting that there are some issues with the final a.i output perhaps will generate a new one in the future. For now most info shown on the image on the right ( or on top when viewing this page on a mobile phone) seems to be not that bad.
So the Skies can be used as background image, can be as lighting source of 3d objects/ characters or a combination of both.
DigiPro 2015 Paper presentation
This is a “Golden Oldy” from 2015 and still is one of my favorites.
Mid June 2015 got a mail from Chris Horvath. He told me he was working on a a DigiPro 2015 presentation for a paper called “Empirical Directional Wave Spectra for Computer Graphics”.
He needed very urgent some HDR skies so sended him the Dutch Skies 360° HDR – Autumn Pack 01 Reloaded Volume for free.
It was Thomas Mansencal who suggested Chris to contact me.
Chris Asked if it was ok that he would mention me in the Paper and during the presentation… well needed to think about it for +/- 0,00023 nano seconds
The paper was presented on 8 august 2015. You can download it here.
Below a excerpt from page 10 of the pdf, went completely nuts after reading it ...wow!!
"Acknowledgements
This paper could not have been accomplished without the patient
teaching of John Anderson. Allen Hemberger, Areito Echevarria,
Mike Root, and Kevin Romond provided valuable feedback on the
paper, and have been longtime users upon whose experience the
design of the system relied. Water is worth loving. Bill Polson at
Pixar provided the insight regarding the use of the change of variables theorem when adapting the spectra to wave-number space. Shane Cooper provided valuable feedback on implementation details for early versions of this system.
Thanks to Weta Digital, Pixar Animation Studios, Google, and
my colleagues from the former Tweak Films for using, supporting,
and contributing to the many incarnations of Empirical Directional
Waves over the last 14 years. Allen Hemberger and Pixar Animation Studios provided beautiful rendered ocean images for this paper, and invaluable aesthetic guidance along the way. Special thanks to Bob Groothuis for the use of his Dutch Skies Sky Dome images in our interactive rendering tool."
Many thanks to Chris & Thomas!
